Shirley Steinke

Shirley Steinke, of Janesville, WI with her nails polished and her lipstick on, passed from this earthly life with grace and dignity on July 31, 2018 and has been reunited with her husband, Bud, who’s been waiting patiently for her since his passing on Valentine’s Day, 2017, only months away from their 65th wedding anniversary. Shirley courageously fought off cancer only to be seriously affected by a stroke, which took away her ability to do all of the things she loved.  She enjoyed having great conversations, walking with her friends on the beautiful Janesville trail system followed by breakfast and coupons for everyone, traveling to places near and far (Ireland, Door County, Gulf Shores, and family cottages), playing her favorite card games like bridge, euchre, and 500, golfing (with a hole in one in 1998!), bowling and her induction to the Women’s Bowling Hall of Fame, playing bingo, being the financial secretary with the Elks Ladies, sewing (where handcrafted was always better than store-bought and any store-bought could be made better with a few alterations), and playing computer games like Words with Friends.  Shirley loved to dance and custom-made her square dance dresses and petticoats and Bud’s square dance shirts.  They were a stylish and fabulous couple to watch on the dance floor, no matter the style of dance. Just shy of her 83rd birthday on August 29, Shirley leaves behind 7 children, 19 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.  Shirley was preceded in death not only by her dear husband Bud, but her parents, Buck and Ginny Benoy, sisters Sally and Bette, uncles, aunts, in-laws Robert and Florence Steinke, and many other extended family members.  They’re all gathering in heaven and welcoming Shirley for a rousing game of cards and to dance in the clouds together.  Shirley was surrounded with love until the end by her children – Gordon (Leigh), Scott, Pam (Rich), Gina (Peter), Brett, Melinda (Glen), Dan (Lisa), grandchildren Andrew (Kim), Chad (Lisa), Tara (Nathan), Zach (Kasey), Erik (Bethany), Matthew, Scott (Danielle), Abby (Andrew), Rich, Laura (Eric), Sarah, Kristin, Kevin (Cheryl), David, Tyler, Lauren, Jacob, Mason, and Gavin, great-grandchildren Joe (Kendra), Allison (Cody), Jacob, Ashlynn, Ryleigh, Gabby, Savannah, Preston, Noah, Arabella and her baby sister due in late August/early September, Julianna, Kayden and their new sibling due in September, Theo and his little brother due in September, and Moselle. We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the staff at Agrace Hospice & Palliative Care for their gentle touch and compassionate care of our sweet mom.  We cannot thank you enough.  Also and especially to mom’s “sisters from other mothers” who kept her social calendar full and gave her a reason to smile every day.  You all came for visits, brought bottles of wine that we shared with mom and held conversations with mom to reminisce on this fun and eventful life she has enjoyed so much.  We know you are all going to miss her.  We feel your love and thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in mom’s memory to Agrace Hospice & Palliative Care, ECHO, or St. John Vianney Catholic Church.  Be of joyful heart when you give of yourself for others. Thank you, Gordon, Scott, Pam, Gina, Brett, Melinda and Dan Steinke A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, August 3, 2018 at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church. Rev. Joseph Baker will preside. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The family is being assisted by Henke-Clarson Funeral Home.
